Electronic discovery, or eDiscovery, is the forensic process of identifying, preserving, collecting, and analyzing electronically stored information in support of an investigation, civil litigation, or criminal proceeding.  The scope and type of electronic data is near limitless and increases daily as our world becomes more connected.  Common forms of electronic data include emails, documents, presentations, databases, voicemails, audio/video files, GPS data, social media data, websites and encompasses what is most often referred to as digital evidence.  These data types can provide essential data points to either support or refute case predication and may dictate the desired outcome of any litigation.

“Departments face large digital evidence backlogs, limited equipment, and potential turnover of examiners.”

“Digital evidence has a wider scope, can be more personally sensitive, is mobile, and requires different training and tools compared with physical evidence.”

Sphinx has recognized the limited resources of many law enforcement, prosecutor, and defense organizations. These limitations also impact large organizations and their offices of general counsel. Understanding these limitations, Sphinx leverages their decades of experience in traditional and technical investigations to offer eDiscovery services to these entities. With the vast array of potential eDiscovery evidence sources, Sphinx provides tailored offerings to each customer individually, addressing their needs in the most cost effective manner.

Data Challenges

Through years of work and support in Law Enforcement, Sphinx has observed the frequent challenges faced by investigators and litigators when managing digital media evidence. The  fidelity of information obtained from tools such as CellBrite or EnCase can often be questionable. Not due to the accuracy or reliability of the analysis tool but due to the abundance of irrelevant information they can easily produce. A ten-thousand page CellBrite report provides little immediate value to legal professionals and may only confuse jury members. To alleviate challenges such as this, Sphinx has developed a standardized and repeatable process capable of providing detailed technical analysis that speaks to the predication of a case while preserving all supporting digital evidence and maintaining the Rules of Evidence.
